Join instructions

The Evening Book Club is a friendly, laid-back space for readers to come together to enjoy a good story and share thoughts, laughter, and conversation.

We meet on the last Friday of each month via Zoom, making it easy to join from the comfort of home.

At the end of each meeting, members help choose the book for the following month—so everyone has a voice in what we read next.

April Selection:

Home Is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose

NLS Book Number: DB 121569

Narrators: Cassandra Campbell, Brittany Pressley, Andrew Eiden, and others.

After their mother passes away, three estranged siblings return to their childhood home to settle her estate. While clearing out the house, they discover a hidden recording that suggests their parents may have been involved in a dark, decades-old mystery. This propulsive thriller examines family dynamics, long-buried secrets, and the unsettling idea that you might not truly know the people who raised you.

Discussion Highlights:

Discussion questions are included below. Participants are welcome to review them in advance, write down responses, or simply use them to guide conversation during the meeting.

All are welcome. Bring your curiosity, your favorite beverage, and your love of books—we look forward to reading with you!

For more information, please call Blagica at 201-996-9100 ext. 115.

Discussion Questions

Rating 1-5

1.Discuss the relationships between the siblings. Did you find the jealousies and conflict realistic (or maybe even relatable)?

2.The novel is set in the (very) small town of Allen’s Grove, Wisconsin. Have you ever lived in a small town like that? How did the setting contribute to the story?

3.What did you think of the way the author structured the book, alternating between each sibling’s point of view along with flashbacks to Laura in 1999?

4.Do you like to document the world around you like Laura and Christie did? What are some of the pros and cons of thoroughly documenting your life?

5.Did you figure out who the true killer was before the reveal? If so, when did you realize and what tipped you off?

6.Do you think you would ever help cover up a crime committed by your child or another close family member like Laura and Brian did? Would it matter if the crime was truly an accident?

7.While a thriller, the novel also deals with heavy themes including addiction, death, and grief. What did you think of the way that Rose addressed these topics?

Important Update on the bergenPAC Program

Important Update on the bergenPAC Program

April 1, 2026

Dear hipcil Members,

Please be advised that as of April 1, 2026, Heightened Independence & Progress will no longer be partnering with the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC).

This decision was not taken lightly. However, due to recent employee turnover, we no longer have the necessary capacity to continue our partnership. After careful consideration, we determined that discontinuing the program is the most responsible course of action to ensure the quality and integrity of our services.

We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to have collaborated with the Bergen Performing Arts Center and are especially grateful for the meaningful opportunities they helped provide to individuals with disabilities throughout Bergen County.

If you have any questions regarding this transition, please feel free to contact our office at 201-996-9100 or at mgonzalez@hipcil.org.

Sincerely,

Marily Gonzalez
