Resources for Low Vision & Blind People
Resources for Low Vision & Blind People.
1. “Hadley”
A non-profit organization located in Illinois. The mission of Hadley is to create personalized learning opportunities that empower adults with vision loss or blindness to thrive – at home, at work, and in their communities.
Website: https://hadley.edu/
Contact info for assistance on how to get started, call 800-323-4238.
On their website you will find:
- A large selection of pre-recorded workshops providing quick, practical advice on areas such as;
- Daily living series (such as “Cleaning Your House”, “Organizing Your Home”, “Safety Basics”, and much more),
- Adjusting to vision loss series,
- Recreation series,
- Technology series,
- Braille series, and
- Working series.
- Various audio podcasts – “Hadley Presents”, and “Insights & Sound Bites”.
- And my favorite, “Discussion Groups”, each meet once a month. You can listen live and chat with others who share your interests. Or listen to recorded sessions, sent out to registrants, after call. Current discussion groups include:
- Book Nook,
- Crafting Circle,
- Embracing Braille,
- Get Up and Go,
- Hadley Growers,
- Resource Roundtable,
- Tech it Out,
- Travel Talk,
- What’s Cooking,
- Writers Circle.
2. “Front Porch”
A non-profit organization located in California. My recommendation below specifically refers to their virtual “Well Connected” program. In this time of separation, “Well Connected” provides laughs, intellectual stimulation, inspiration, conversation and more, all via groups you can join from home, by phone or online.
Website https://covia.org/programs/well-connected/
Contact info for assistance on how to get started, call 877-797-7299.
While this is not specifically a blind/low vision organization they do have two weekly groups that meet our specific needs:
- Low Vision Support Group, which meets on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 PM (I currently join this weekly, and can highly recommend),
- Support & Discussion Group for the Blind, which meets Tuesdays from 4 to 4:45 PM.
There are, however, many other calls for “mental stimulation”, check out their catalog online for a full listing of what Well Connected offers, or give them a call.
The “Well Connected” current Winter program runs from January 1 through April 30.
